Obituary for Lennox Rex Gibbs

Lennox Rex Gibbs
LENNOX GIBBS
November 8, 1944 – February 17, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce that Lennox Gibbs passed away at Markham Stouffville Hospital on Friday, February 17, 2017 at the age of 72. Lennox leaves behind his wife, Rose, his children, Marcia, Nadia and Michael, his first wife Lynette, grand-daughter Tamenech, nieces, Kay Hamilton, Shelley Hughes and Kim Tamaya, cousins, Valerie Singh, Yvonne Wintz and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Gail Tamaya and his infant son, David.
Lennox was born in Georgetown, Guyana, South America, to Eunice Talbert and Roy Gibbs. He attended Queen’s College in Georgetown for his secondary education. Lennox obtained a First Class Honours degree in Geological Engineering in 1974 from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He returned to Guyana to work with the Guyana Bauxite Company in Linden.
Lennox then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he attended Harvard Business School, graduating in 1977 with his M.B.A. A brief stint as a geologist back in Guyana followed. Lennox then settled in Mandeville, Jamaica, where he worked for several years in the Systems and Finance Departments of Alcan Jamaica Ltd. This period with Alcan included an exchange position that took him and his family to Ireland where he worked at the Aughinish Alumina plant in County Limerick. Lennox was transferred from Jamaica to the Head Office of Alcan in Montreal in 1988. Lennox subsequently worked for Astral Entertainment also in Montreal and later moved into the banking sector in Toronto. Near the end of his life, Lennox was working in Barbados on projects he enjoyed.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mateya Trinkaus and Dr. Andrew Patterson, oncologists at Markham Stouffville Hospital, for their excellent care and compassionate treatment of Lennox. We would also like to thank all the wonderful staff on Ward 2c at the hospital for their kindness, care and compassion. Special thanks to Nurses Andrea, Meg, Nicky and Hong and to Social Worker, Tanya Dubé, and personal support worker, Liz. Cremation has occurred, according to Lennox’s wishes. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2017 at Dixon-Garland funeral home, 166 Main Street in Markham from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is available to the rear of the building. A Memorial Service will be held in New York in March. Further details will be available later. If you wish to do so, you may make donations, in Lennox’s memory, to Camp Jumoke, a medically supervised summer camp located in Bracebridge, Ontario, for children with Sickle Cell Disease. The website for Camp Jumoke is www.jumoke.org.
