Obituary for Mary Susan Judith Rankin (Wright)

Mary Susan Judith Rankin (Wright)
RANKIN, Mary Susan (nee Wright)
Passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto on Sunday October 23, 2016 at the age of 64. Predeceased by her sister, Barbara (Jere) Hartnett, she will be missed by her sister Penny Wright. Mary Sue was a special aunt to her many nieces and nephews, and loved by her many cousins and extended family. Loving foster mother to Darlene Bolt, “Soupy” as she was affectionately dubbed, was a devoted godmother to her niece Mary Hartnett as well as to countless offspring of her many friends.

Mary Sue’s formative years saw her grow up in a small mining town in Nephton, Ontario where her deep love of nature was forged. She later moved with her family to Peterborough and then attended Western University where she earned a Bachelor of Science. While living in London, she became active in the community, assisting at a group home, remaining socially aware and involved throughout her life. In 1976 Mary Sue and her former husband, Alan Rankin moved to Kingston. An artist to her core, Mary Sue, was one of the founders of the Edward Day Gallery which opened in Kingston in 1992. The gallery moved to Toronto in 1996 where Mary Sue and her co-director, Kelly McCray, worked together for many years promoting local, national and international contemporary art and artists. Mary Sue was committed to sharing the gallery space to support the music community and hosted hundreds of concerts and other events. She will be sincerely missed by her many circles of friends, colleagues and various communities both near and far.
The family offers a Special thank you to the doctors and nursing team at St. Michael’s Hospital and Trillium. Mary Sue had consented to be an organ donor, yet again demonstrating her giving spirit. A Memorial will be held Sunday, October 30th 10am-1pm at the Angell Gallery, 1444 Dupont St., #15, Toronto, ON, entrance North off Campbell Avenue. (Park anywhere in complex) 416-530-0444. A donation in Mary Sue's memory to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Dixon-Garland Funeral Home.
